Come out on November 12th and learn about Women and the Media – Guest Speaker Hayley Crooks

We all know how women are depicted in the media has had and continues to have a major impact on the world today. Join us on November 12th to learn more about women & the media.

Where: City of Ottawa, Honeywell Room (2nd Floor)

Featuring guest speaker Hayley Crooks:
Hayley is a Ph.D. candidate in the Institute of Feminist & Gender Studies at the University of Ottawa. Hayley employs a visual arts-based research methodologies (such as video making) to investigate gendered cyber-violence with young people. Recently, she conducted research with youth as part of a Status of Women funded project entitled “Cyber & Sexual Violence: In A Day” with Alan Neal in a piece called “What Teenage Girls Really Think About Cyber-Bullying”. She is a co-author of white papers on cyber-violence and has published in Cleo. A Journal of Film & Feminism as well as Canadian Journal of Communication. Hayley also has a background in non-fiction television and documentary production.

BPW Ottawa is back from summer break!


Join us at our first Bags N Bangles Bash on September 17!

We hope you enjoyed a good summer and are coming back feeling rested and refreshed .  To ease our way into autumn, we have planned a social gathering to be held on the THIRD Thursday of this September, i.e. September 17, 2015,  at Industria Italian Brasserie at the newly redeveloped Lansdowne Park, 225 Marche Way.

It will be a fun evening featuring networking, canapés and cash bar.  Meet other business and professional women and enjoy shopping our silent auction collection of gently loved and previously treasured fashion accessories.  Come and bring a friend or as many as you like!

It’s Patio Season!

BPW Ottawa does not normally meet in July or August but we are inviting you to please join us Thursday, July 10th, at 6:00pm for Happy Hour and networking at the Parliament Pub patio. Guests are welcome.

The Parliament Pub is located directly opposite the Peace Tower on Wellington St. with another entrance at 101 Sparks St. [The Summer Picnic previously planned was cancelled in favor of networking and Happy Hour at the Parliament Pub by the Programs and Planning Committee.]

There is no charge for this event (as you will pay your own way) but we would appreciate it if you pick up a free ticket at to give us some idea of the number of people to include in our reservation.

SPECIAL DATE – BPW Ottawa meets next Thursday, June 5th

Our club meeting will take place on a special date this month – Thursday, 5 June – so as to avoid conflicting with the Ontario election on Thursday, 12 June.

At our meeting, we will be hearing from Bryonie Baxter, Executive Director of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Ottawa.

The Elizabeth Fry Society of Ottawa, established in 1951, provides assistance to women involved in the criminal justice system and those at risk of coming into conflict with the law. The Society provides support services to women in Ottawa, particularly women incarcerated in provincial and federal institutions. Ms. Baxter serves as Executive Director, as well as the Federal Advocate for the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies, and President of the Council of Elizabeth Fry Societies of Ontario.

Previously, Ms. Baxter served for twenty years as an educator with the Peel District School Board, including positions such as Vice-Principal. In 2010, Ms. Bryonie was the recipient of a Province of Ontario Leading Women, Building Communities Award, which recognized her “exceptional community leadership to improve the lives of women and girls in Ontario.”
